Summary

For the first time ever, a beautiful slipcased edition of the forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout in colour by J。R。R。 Tolkien himself, with the complete text printed in two colours and with many bonus features unique to this edition。

The Silmarilli were three perfect jewels, fashioned by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves, and within them was imprisoned the last Light of the Two Trees of Valinor。 But the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, stole the jewels and set them within his iron crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth。

The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism, against the great Enemy。 It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part。

The book also includes several shorter works: the Ainulindalë, a myth of the Creation, and the Valaquenta, in which the nature and powers of each of the gods is described。 The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings

This deluxe slipcased edition contains the complete text, which is printed in two colours and features, for the very first time, more than 50 colour paintings, illustrations and designs drawn by J。R。R。 Tolkien himself as he composed this epic work。

Unique to this edition are two poster-size, fold-out maps revealing all the detail of Beleriand as the tales grew, an illustrated booklet featuring ‘A Brief Account of The Silmarillion and its Making’ by Christopher Tolkien, and a printed art card reproducing ‘Taniquetil’。

It is additionally quarterbound in blue leather, with raised ribs on the spine, stamped in three foils on black cloth boards, and housed in a custom-built clothbound slipcase。 The pages are edged in silver and include a ribbon marker。

Phenomenal world building and interesting Lore, albeit hard to keep track of all characters as it spans many races and generations。 The latter parts of the book also feels rushed, as a result of much of it being covered by other books in the series。

Wow, I loved this and the history of it。 It was so nice to learn things behind the LOTR trilogy。 Finally finished it。

Words cannot express the depth of this epic work。 It’s a gargantuan story of Biblical, Homeric proportions。 I was deeply moved reading through some of these tales。

This is the second time I read the Silmarillion。 It was worth reading again because I got a lot more out of the story。 I got hold of a paperback version of the book that had a letter by JRR Tolkien at the beginning。 This letter was very interesting to read at the conclusion of my reading because it summarises the Silmarillion and the author explains the themes of the book。

I enjoyed this even if parts where a little harder to get through then others。 I think this is only going to be interesting if you are a big Lord of the Rings fan。 It's more like a historical fiction book then a novel。 I will probably never read it again unlike Lord of the Rings 。I think knowing all of this will make rereading Lord Of The Rings even richer。 I did listen to some of the book on audio which helped a lot。 I enjoyed this even if parts where a little harder to get through then others。 I think this is only going to be interesting if you are a big Lord of the Rings fan。 It's more like a historical fiction book then a novel。 I will probably never read it again unlike Lord of the Rings 。I think knowing all of this will make rereading Lord Of The Rings even richer。 I did listen to some of the book on audio which helped a lot。 。。。more

The audiobook narrator's name is Martin Shaw, but damn if he doesn't sound like Chris Hemsworth 😍😍I love these stories。 Taking your time is definitely the way to go here, the same as if you were reading an actual history book; the chapters aren't necessarily connected into a fully-flowing narrative。 Many thanks to the Phoenix cast YT channel for their uploads。 I would have taken much longer to read this without them。Definitely love the name-drops of familiar characters。 They didn't happen often, The audiobook narrator's name is Martin Shaw, but damn if he doesn't sound like Chris Hemsworth 😍😍I love these stories。 Taking your time is definitely the way to go here, the same as if you were reading an actual history book; the chapters aren't necessarily connected into a fully-flowing narrative。 Many thanks to the Phoenix cast YT channel for their uploads。 I would have taken much longer to read this without them。Definitely love the name-drops of familiar characters。 They didn't happen often, but I smiled when they did。 Beren and Luthien may be one of the greatest stories of Middle Earth ever。 Also the fall of Númenor。 And the Trees of Valinor。 I finished the final bit, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, this morning。 Given how long characters like Elrond and Galadriel had been in Middle Earth, I was surprised at how late of an addition the Istari were。 Did I cry? Of course。 Is this going on the Reread pile? Of course。 Will I skip the Beleriand chapter next time? Probably 🤣 。。。more

Initially quite heavy-going due to the sheer volume of characters, locations and concepts that one is faced with, The Silmarillion soon proves to be an interesting and entertaining source of insight into the lore and history of Middle-Earth and the realms beyond it。

I did it! I finished it! It was a little rough there, for a moment, but I'm so glad I stuck it out!Okay, I don't think I can describe this book。 The fact that Tolkien came up with all of these stories, and made them fit so well together is mind-blowing。 I've said it before, and I'll say it again。 This man was a genius!Granted, there were quite a few times where my eyes glazed over, and I couldn't really follow, but there were enough times that didn't happen for me to still really enjoy it。My fav I did it! 5/5I absolutely adores this book! and would recommend to any LOTR Fan, or fiction。。 It is, very rightfully, compared to the Bible。 It's not your regular story to read, it is worthy of study and attention。I can't really explain this book to anyone that hasn't read it since it starts at the very beginning of time (and WHAT A BEAUTIFUL ORIGIN STORY) and ends when the world itself ends。 It's not an easy read。。。 you have to take notes and be patient - Inside this books there are so many beautifully w 5/5I absolutely adores this book! and would recommend to any LOTR Fan, or fiction。。 It is, very rightfully, compared to the Bible。 It's not your regular story to read, it is worthy of study and attention。I can't really explain this book to anyone that hasn't read it since it starts at the very beginning of time (and WHAT A BEAUTIFUL ORIGIN STORY) and ends when the world itself ends。 It's not an easy read。。。 you have to take notes and be patient - Inside this books there are so many beautifully written stories! about god-like creatures and monsters, and immortal elves and mortal beings - Larger than life story telling。 My personal favorite it's "THE TALE OF BEREN AND LUTHIEN" and even had a tattoo about it。。。 Not recommended people that don't enjoy fiction or long books。 But if you do。。。 it will *very* likely become one of your favorites 。。。more

This is brilliant, don’t get me wrong … but it reads like nonfiction。 It’s choppy, dry, confusing (too many names that all sound the same and get introduced only to die, often in ways that don’t advance the story), and did I mention dry? Each of these stories on their own would have been amazing fleshed out and developed into their own pieces with a single plot line … and while I’m sure that was the plan, this book, and the history of middle earth series feel like Christopher Tolkien was money h This is brilliant, don’t get me wrong … but it reads like nonfiction。 It’s choppy, dry, confusing (too many names that all sound the same and get introduced only to die, often in ways that don’t advance the story), and did I mention dry?

Wow -- pure magic。I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't read this before。 Everyone I spoke to went on about how dense this is, so I never took it on。This story is so powerful in its creation narrative and the manner in which dissent and evil enter into the world and continue to corrupt relationships。Overall, a very moving, poignant story。 Wow -- pure magic。I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't read this before。 Everyone I spoke to went on about how dense this is, so I never took it on。This story is so powerful in its creation narrative and the manner in which dissent and evil enter into the world and continue to corrupt relationships。Overall, a very moving, poignant story。 。。。more

It took me longer to read this book than the rest of the series combined—beautiful and sprawling, but also remarkably complex, this felt like a whole body of literature from within the world of the lord of the rings world itself (which I suppose is what it was meant to be in some sense)。 Really interesting to see the Norse saga influence—definitely more prevalent here than in the original novels—forming a kind of backbone for the storytelling in the series。 Don’t think I could get through it aga It took me longer to read this book than the rest of the series combined—beautiful and sprawling, but also remarkably complex, this felt like a whole body of literature from within the world of the lord of the rings world itself (which I suppose is what it was meant to be in some sense)。 Really interesting to see the Norse saga influence—definitely more prevalent here than in the original novels—forming a kind of backbone for the storytelling in the series。 Don’t think I could get through it again but super interesting to read。 。。。more

It's not particularly easy to review due to the way in which it came to exist, but it for sure has some of the richest language and world building the world of literature has ever seenIt recounts so many tales and events from the world of Middle-Earth and has so many names and neologisms that the last 100 pages are footnotes on pronunciation and definition (not to mention maps and family trees), which are tough to slog through at times。 This isnt a book to binge, but a book to supplement fans of It's not particularly easy to review due to the way in which it came to exist, but it for sure has some of the richest language and world building the world of literature has ever seenIt recounts so many tales and events from the world of Middle-Earth and has so many names and neologisms that the last 100 pages are footnotes on pronunciation and definition (not to mention maps and family trees), which are tough to slog through at times。 This isnt a book to binge, but a book to supplement fans of the high fantasy world。 I've read this before going onto any other Tolkien tale (save The Hobbit), and I do feel like it will take another read after a long pause to understand and digest better。 The first read alone took me several months going a few pages at a time, really trying to internalise and digest what was written。 But it is so fantastic and rich, it is definitely worth being read at your own pace。 I wouldnt say it's a masterpiece, it was never intended to even be a book but rather a collection of notes that some day Tolkien may have turned into a series of full length novels, but it certainly reads like a look inside one of the greatest minds that literature has ever known 。。。more
